Adam Wainwright - Sculptor

The works presented were created over a one year period whilst living in the town of Pietrasanta near Carrara, North Italy - the home of the Italian marble industry. I created a series of relative sculptures, which represent a whole when appearing together. Therefore the pieces are collectively named 'Fragments'.

The inspiration for this body of work was influenced by my impressions of the Roman Forum in Rome. What presently exists of a once great civilization is stone debris strewn across the original site - a situation common to many achievements of ancient civilizations. Each of my works are informed and evolved by their counterpart pieces within the series, all conclusions arrived at holistically as opposed to individually.

As an artist working within a foreign culture I found it possible - through distance - to focus on my own cultural background. The differences experienced created a greater sense of appreciation of my native English culture. 'Fragments' was created whilst reflecting on early childhood sensations pertaining to my interest in 'objects' whilst growing up in England. Philosophically I am excited by the unknown, unseen universe (dark matter) concerning theories of quantum physics and cosmology. 'Fragments', conceptually, are made with an impression of the Roman Forum in mind. The sculptures are marble representations of technological devices, which correspond to astral forces. These objects relate to civilizations past, future, present and imagined.

Fragments

FRAGMENTS is about applying unsteady theories to the grey matter and to the white. To set precision instruments for the astral observation of urban refuse. The idea of implanting viaducts of channelled energy that flow through the Apuan marble. It's about resuming fragments of the future and projections a long distance from buried civilizations.
This subtle archeological operation, which unveils traces of what does not exist. It is the abstract of Adam Wainwright
