A brilliant bass player, a fascinating composer and very complex and volatile character, who recording some of jazz’s best compositions. His tempestuous personality led into trouble but also sparked some of the most committed playing from his sidemen.

‘Goodbye Pork Pie’ (a tribute to the late Lester Young) to the vitriolic ‘fables of Faubus’ (a Civil Rights protest against a Southern state governor).
