Frederick Rhead
Frederick Rhead originally studied at the Minton Factory under Marc Solon. He was the father of Charlotte Rhead (Art Deco ceramics designer) and Frederick Hurton. He also worked for Wedgwood in the capacity of ceramics designer. In partnership with F. H. Barker he established the Atlas Tile Works where his daughter Charlotte was later to join him. From 1912 Frederick Rhead designed as Art Director at H. J. Wood & Son adopting the tradename ‘Bursley Ware’ during the nineteen thirties. In 1913 history repeated itself when Charlotte followed her father to the company.
In the early part of the 20th century the Shelley factory employed Frederick Rhead to to produce wares under the ‘Intarsio’ tradename.
